Why are you passionate about afterschool?

Afterschool is where I truly believe individuals find out who they are and what they like to do. Quality OST programs give youth of all ages a safe and unique opportunity to try new things and share extraordinary experiences. It is a place to be creative, explore, and learn about anything!

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

I would want to have spider powers, super strength, and super speed!  I want to do so many things in my life, so if I had super speed, I could accomplish many of those opportunities.  I would want super strength not just to move heavy objects but to also be strong for the individuals around me!

What’s a quick, fun fact about you that most people would not know?

Fact, I am a dog mom of 2 amazing fur babies, King and Stella, that I love so much!

    Director of Communications

Why are you passionate about afterschool?

I believe that developing the education and empathy of our younger generations is a key first step toward solving our society’s most complex problems. Afterschool provides nearly countless opportunities for America’s youth to learn, to grow, and to find more in common with each other.

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

Super-intelligence, so that I could figure out how to create renewable energy resources or how to colonize other planets!

What’s a quick, fun, or quirky fact about you most people would not know?

I’m a musician – I play drums and guitar. I have a piano and a banjo that are more rarely played, but I just love instruments.

  • Bri Gaston-Bell

    Bri Gaston-Bell
Associate Vice President of Quality Initiatives

Why are you passionate about afterschool?

I am passionate about afterschool opportunities for all youth. It is my experience that quality programs have something to offer every individual regardless of age, interests or backgrounds! One of my favorite encounters was a program that offered a fish fry where youth actually participated and learned skills related to fishing, biology of a fish, and even math skills in the kitchen in order to prepare for a fish fry! I am amazed at the different options and experiences that youth today are able to experience and wish I had participated in such activities growing up!

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

I wish I could have a super power that allowed me to radiate encouragement to those I encounter. How awesome would it be to make everyone in your presence feel supported and inspired in all they do!

What’s a quick, fun or quirky fact about you that most people would not know?

I eat everything with silverware! Burgers, pizza, hotdogs, brownies, etc.!

  • Andrea Gerig

    Associate Director of Engagement

Why are you passionate about afterschool?

Afterschool is one of the most efficient and effective ways to impact communities and change the world!  Afterschool supports everyone – young people who are nurtured and given opportunities, families who know their children are cared for and safe, and a community that is strengthened by healthy relationships.

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

It would be wonderful to have the power of healing, because helping people feel better brings out everyone’s best.  When people are healthy and thriving, they do amazing things together!

What’s a quick, fun fact about you that most people would not know?

I joyfully catch and release all bugs that get into the house. Yes, even wasps and spiders.  Centipedes, too.

  • Lakshmi Hasanadka

    Lakshmi Hasanadka
    CEO

Why are you passionate about afterschool?

I’m passionate about afterschool because I’m passionate about reducing equity gaps for racially-marginalized and underserved children. Additionally, high-quality afterschool programs  provide protective experiences to help children develop resilience. Afterschool programs offer children the opportunity to reach their full potential—in a safe environment in which they are inspired to learn.

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

I would like the ability to stop time. As a mother of three children who works full-time, I never have enough time to take care of my to-do list or to take care of myself (and sleep!). I can’t imagine what I could accomplish if I could stop time and give myself a few extra hours.

What’s a quick, fun or quirky fact about you that most people would not know?

I’m listed on IMDb! When I was in law school, I served as a graduate assistant with a student organization that brought Director Kevin Smith to campus for a speech and Q&A session, and Smith used the event in a documentary. “Miscellaneous crew” credit!

  • Lamont (Monty) Hulse

    Lamont (Monty) Hulse
    Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives

Why are you passionate about afterschool?

It’s so exciting to see children learn. Quality afterschool empowers young people to follow their natural instincts to imagine, create, and grow.  Every day, afterschool programs and skilled youth workers in Indiana’s communities encourage young people to exercise their innate creativity and curiosity.  It’s a privilege to do what I can to ensure that every young Hoosier can access the programs, people, and possibilities of quality afterschool.

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

If I could fly like Superman or run as fast as Flash, it would be much easier to travel around Indiana to support after school coalitions, programs and leaders. And if I had the Green Lantern’s power ring, my super powers would be limited only by my imagination, just like a young person in afterschool.

What’s a quick, fun, or quirky fact about you most people would not know?

I used to read a lot of D.C. comic books.

    Keith Monfreda
Director of Professional Development & Engagement

Why are you passionate about afterschool?

Afterschool programs have tremendous potential to shape the life of a child. Staff spend as much time with kids each day as their parents do and that is an important opportunity to help support kids as they grow and learn.

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

My superpower would be a “Matrix style” ability to upload knowledge so I can instantly help adults and kids with whatever they want to learn.

What’s a quick, fun, or quirky fact about you most people would not know?

I loved my time as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana so much I extended my service – twice!

  • Stephanie Putt

    Stephanie Putt
    Associate Vice President of Operations

Why are you passionate about afterschool?

I was raised by a single mother who was the sole provider for my sister and me. Like many students, I experienced gaps in care between when the school days ended, and parental care began. Afterschool has the power to close those gaps by providing safe, supportive, and productive environments which have the potential to change the course of a child’s life.

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

I would love to possess the super power of teleportation. I love to travel and learn about different cultures and ways of life. More importantly, the power of teleportation would allow me to quickly deliver food, supplies, and resources directly to those with immediate needs.

What’s a quick, fun, or quirky fact about you most people would not know?

I created an original pilot podcast and submitted it for consideration in the WNYC Podcast Accelerator contest. My idea did not make it to the final round, but I continue recording episodes for fun.

  • Brent Wake

    Brent Wake
    Vice President of Engagement

Why are you passionate about afterschool?

Afterschool provides significant return on investment in the development of the whole child.  While children’s family and academic lives receive justifiable attention, afterschool is an often-overlooked arena in which some of the greatest potential for positive impact should be realized.  There remain so many opportunities to facilitate that realization.

If you could have super powers, what power would you want and why?

Transportability, because I love the idea of no waiting lines and minimal time spent in actual travel to any place of my choosing

What’s a quick, fun fact about you that most people would not know?

    I’m a long-term beginning bassist.
