21st Century Community Learning Centers provide afterschool and summer learning opportunities in every state. Programs are selected for funding based on their ability to meet the needs of students and families and their connection to education priorities in the state. However, only 1 in 3 funding requests are awarded due to intense competition and lack of adequate federal funding.
Afterschool and summer programs play an essential role in supporting the healthy
development of young people by serving as a safe space that fosters belonging, develops
supportive relationships with peers and adult mentors, encourages healthy behaviors, and
helps young people build and cultivate the skills necessary to navigate through the struggles
and challenges they may come up against in life.
